SWWD April 2010 Meeting
By Eileen Morton
The Southwest Women’s Division met on April
21 at the Santa Anita Bowling Club. The membership committee reported that there
are currently 615 women belonging to the Southwest Division and 889 men. This reflects a small decrease for the women
and increase for the men. Women belonging
to USLBA are only 240 while there are 392 men. Delegates were urged to explain the importance
of supporting the national association to their clubs.
Ladies’ Days are doing well
with around 35 women attending the last two events. At some point, the Ladies’ Days will include
some element of instruction and practice drills as well as the usual blind draw
games.
Our new marketing firm is
working to generate publicity for lawn bowling nationwide. Much good publicity has already
happened. They are working on having TV
and other media coverage of the US Open in September. Any club who has successful coverage or
pictures in their local areas is asked to share this by sending it to the SW
Division website for inclusion.
A new merger committee
consisting of six men and women met on April 6 to once again discuss the
feasibility of merging the SWWD and the Men’s SW Division organizations. After much discussion, the committee
recommended that we make no change as everything is working well now. We will continue to work on better communication
with the men and to this end, our president Jan Hargraves, will appoint a
communication committee.
The new SWWD Singles tournament
which was played for the first time in April, will
be named the K.T. Stone Tournament in honor of long-time champion bowler Katie
Stone who recently passed away. A trophy
will be purchased and the winner, Dee McSparran, will be allowed to take it
home and return it next year.
